William J. “Seph” Shaw, IV, MPAS, PA-C – Biography

Seph Shaw, PA-C I guess the first thing I should do is explain my name. My full name is William Joseph Shaw IV. My parents weren’t too fond of any of the usual nicknames like Joe, Will, or Bill so they got creative. They took the “Jo” off of Joseph and were left with Seph. That’s what I’ve always gone by and it’s the name I’ll answer to quickest. I am a native of Fort Worth and grew up on the southwest side of town. I attended All Saints Episcopal School K-12 and played sports throughout high school. I received my bachelor’s degree in biology from The University of Texas at San Antonio in 2002. I received a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and passed the Physician Assistant National Certification Exam in 2005.
I started my career at Plano Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Spine Center working with Dr. F. Alan Barber. I was part of a large team that included Dr. Barber, one surgeon in fellowship training rotating through every 6 months, and two other physician assistants. It was a great place to work. As part of a team I had other physician assistants available to help me transition from student PA to working PA. Brad Maxey PA-C was instrumental in this and continues to be a good friend and mentor. I worked in Plano for one year before leaving to take advantage of another opportunity.
One of the fellowship surgeons who rotated through the Plano office was Dr. Michael Boothby. During his fellowship we were able to work together and we both felt that we could make a good team. Once he had moved to Fort Worth and become established he called and I gladly accepted his offer to come home to Ft. Worth and join his new practice. It seems like just the other day, but we are now creeping up on a decade of work together. After 5 years at Southwest Orthopedic Associates, I am excited to be a part of Dr. Boothby’s new practice, The Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute of Fort Worth. Here, we hope to take our medical careers to the next level and provide the best orthopedic care in town.
Outside of the office I try to keep busy. I am recently engaged and Kristi and I hope to be married once she finishes nursing school. We both enjoy spending time with our friends and family. I love sports and the outdoors. I’m a lifelong Jimmy Buffett fan and love going to his concerts each year. I play golf whenever possible and especially enjoy playing in the annual PMR charity golf tournament where Dr. Boothby and I have managed to be on the winning team in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Fishing is probably my favorite thing to do and usually if I take a few days off the destination will have water somewhere nearby. I also take time out each year to return to Galveston and give orthopedic lectures to the physician assistant students. Thanks for taking an interest in OSMI and I hope that if you need orthopedic care you’ll give us the chance to provide it.
