When we moved into our new OSMI facility, we added several innovative features to our treatment and physical therapy lineup. Our team has been particularly excited to put our new HydroWorx therapy pool to use for hydrotherapy (water therapy) rehabilitation.
Patients like Sarah are making great progress toward their rehab goals in the HydroWorx pool. Sarah is using hydrotherapy to treat chronic subluxation/instability of her right shoulder. She’s looking forward to playing volleyball again and being able to pick up a backpack without partially dislocating her shoulder.
Designed specifically for physical rehabilitation, the HydroWorx pool includes an underwater treadmill, adjustable water depth, and resistance therapy jets. Water provides an ideal environment for rehabilitation because it decreases body weight, thereby reducing impact on joints. Patients can build strength and flexibility and practice proper mechanics in a safe, low-impact environment. The water provides mild resistance and support through buoyancy.
In the Hydroworx pool, Sarah is able to perform exercises that strengthen the muscles surrounding the shoulder joint to support the shoulder capsule and increase stability to decrease chronic subluxation at the shoulder joint.
Sarah can move her shoulder in the pool in ways that she can’t otherwise without pain and instability. Due to effects of gravity, her shoulder would partially dislocate when she tried the strengthening exercises on land. The reduced gravity provided by the HydroWorx pool allows Sarah to perform the functional exercises properly.
